Beautiful Bells - Managing Depth

Another very interesting artist. I'd have to say his sound is mostly chill, downtempo, sometimes hip hop rhythms, sometimes abstract rhythms and lots of samples and effects.

Good Mornings - Beautiful Bells

Beautiful Bells is the Alabama-born Justin Peake, who now splits his time between New Orleans and Brooklyn. While primarily a drummer, music has always been at the center of Peake's life, starting with the violin at age 4, and later the piano at age 6, learning drums and guitar in his early teens, Justin's family history is deeply rooted in Jazz. With a broad and eclectic array of musical influences, citing names like Iannis Xenakis, J Dilla, Fela Kuti, Bill Evans, Autechre, John Cage, and many in between, harmonious complexity is the fuel behind many of Justin's multifaceted works.

With more concern regarding the true expression of a musical vision, Peake states that "I don't want to say something musically or artistically that's already been said because...well, it's already been said. The next record will be different. And the one after that will be different too, and on and on. I'm coming at electronic music [based on] what feels good to me." As Beautiful Bells, his forward-thinking beats wax future jazz with ample helpings of homemade samples and improvised melodies, fusing them with synths, as well as instruments both digital and analog. Perhaps it is best summed up by examining the meaning of the name Beautiful Bells-- the root "bell" is used in many languages in the word "beautiful," while the ringing of bells produces some of the most physically complex tones that we observe in the world. Tricky - Mixed Race

Tricky, the man behind some of the most famous lyrics in early trip hop, has a new album out. Most people probably remember hearing Tricky's vocals on Massive Attack's Blue Lines. He worked with Massive Attack on that album as well as wrote some of the lyrics for Protection, at the same time his debut album Maxinquaye was receiving huge acclaim in the UK. 

Personally, it was 1997's Pre-Millenium Tension that introduced me to Tricky as a solo artist. "Makes Me Wanna Die" featuring the vocals of Martina Topley-Bird was one of those songs that stuck me deep from the first time I heard it and became a treasure hunt to regain that sense memory later in life.

The new album Mixed Race (available at Amazon) is definitely a mix of all the different influences Tricky has channeled throughout his career. Blues, trip-hop, jazz, reggae, and dance are all present on this album. Featured is a track called Kingston Logic (sometimes listed as UK Jamaican) which is actually a really kool collaboration of Daft Punk, Tricky, and a couple of other artists. I'm not sure if Terry Lynn was a part of this production. Murder Weapon was the first single put out from this album. Using the familiar Peter Gunn guitar riff, it's a catchy sound but otherwise not my choice for a featured track.

The lead song, Every Day is a heavily blues infused trip hop song which will quickly get stuck in your head. Ghetto Stars is more the dark, punk electro trip hop style I loved from Pre-Millenium Tension. Time To Dance is a really interesting track simply because it sounds a lot like some of the chill-wave we hear these days from acts like Miami Horror. Early Bird is classic jazzy Tricky with his signature voice crawling all over and under your skin.

Lucky me, I actually just saw The XX at The Tabernacle here in Atlanta last week. Friggin awesome show. I really dig their sound though and I've been playing remixes of their songs in almost all my sets, so seeing them live and hearing the original tracks performed live was incredible. Not to mention that their stage setup looked pretty kool as well (Ya, I took that photo below with my phone...I never got to take photography courses).

And whaddya know.. few days later I get this sweet remix of Crystallised sent to us from Slyde. Brilliant work fellas.

Thus far, Zach Saginaw’s releases as Shigeto have been fragments, albeit singularly satisfying fragments—EP-length glimpses into the Brooklyn producer’s creative psyche. After filling two EPs on Ghostly International (Semi Circle & What We Held On To ) , Shigeto’s lush, sumptuous take on instrumental hip-hop has fully materialized. Full Circle , the artist’s first full-length album due on November 9th, completes the journey begun with Shigeto’s Semi-Circle EP, synthesizing the drummer/producer’s signature themes of family, continuity, and musical boundary-pushing into a vibrant, fully unified artistic statement.

The sounds on Full Circle come from four years of obsessive field recording and collaboration. Saginaw brought his Tascam mini-recorder with him everywhere, capturing the “glasses, chains, breathing, children, family meals, monks singing in cathedrals, walks in the south of France, and good friends offering their musical skill” that would all find homes in the record’s compositional nooks and crannies. As a result of Saginaw’s constant documentation, the songs on Full Circle play like chapters in an ongoing story—as in “Escape from the Incubator”, whose initial rhythmic claustrophobia opens up into a boom-clap nocturnal chase, or “French Kiss Power Up”, whose romantic digital strut gives way to discord and fragmentation as the waves of synthesizer give way to a shaky, neurotic coda. Full Circle is framed by the “Ann Arbor” diptych, a pair of beat suites named after Saginaw’s hometown (one featuring a sample of Detroit MC SelfSays), all double-thick synths and triple-strength kick drums. Saginaw plays the majority of his rhythms by hand, and Full Circle’s consistently deep pocket is the record’s secret weapon, thumping and breathing like a living being.

Having set the stage with Semi-Circle and What We Held On To EPs—twin treatises on Saginaw’s Japanese grandmother’s escape from a US internment camp—Shigeto is clearly ready to draw the tale to a close and take center stage. “This release represents the end of the beginning—or perhaps that there is no end and no beginning at all,” says Saginaw. Regardless, Full Circle is the start of something great.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Beat-driven but given to richly textured sound design, rhythmically fractured but melodically sumptuous, Shigeto’s music is a bridge between the past and present, bringing the artist face to face with a creative legacy that spans decades.

Zach was brought up on a steady diet of Michigan-bred music, as his father spoon-fed him old Motown and jazz records by the crateload. Zach picked up the drums at an early age, spending much of his childhood playing in the Detroit/Ann Arbor music scene. After nearly flunking out of high school—save for his music studies—Zach spent three years studying jazz at the New School in NYC and three more in London, where he began woodshedding, obsessed with learning electronic production. Soon enough, beats materialized, Zach moved to Brooklyn and took up the name Shigeto, and Zach’s peers began to take notice.

Zach’s body of work has grown over the last few years to the tune of several EPs on Moodgadget as Shigeto and with A Setting Sun, a pair of EPs under the alias Frank Omura (another family-name reference), and remixes for Worst Friends, Praveen & Benoit, Tycho, Mux Mool, Charles Trees, A Setting Sun, Beautiful Bells, Shlohmo, and more. The Semi-Circle EP will be his first release with Ghostly International; the full-length Full Circle is on the horizon. Semi-Circle is a fiercely independent work of art, nominally indebted to instrumental hip-hop but, like Zach, straddling many worlds at once. Cool shades of ambient music, stuttering early IDM, dubstep sub-bass, and jazz melodicism color Shigeto’s palette, which he wields with a painterly attention to detail.

As Ghostly International hits its 10th anniversary, Shigeto is one of the first of a wave of young artists who grew up influenced by the label’s early output. And again, names come into play. “Putting out this record on Ghostly isn’t just ‘getting signed,’ for me,” says Zach, “it’s becoming part of a family, an influence that I’ve respected forever. That’s Full Circle.” Let’s just say the feeling’s mutual.

Andre Obin - Front Runner

A very interesting little album here from Moodgadget. Andre Obin offers up the first track for free, but I highly recommend you check out the rest of this release. Industrial at times and progressive at others, it's an evolving soundscape. "According to Obin, the title comes from the idea that a front runner performs best when he or she pulls away from the pack. Deastro - Mind Altar

In the months after the early-2009 release of his space-rock opus Moondagger, Deastro ’s Randolph Chabot descended into a frenzy of writing, recording new song after new song and releasing some the tracks for free on his blog. Even then, his style was beginning to metamorphose—growing layers of murky atmospherics, sprouting fizzy textures and plumes of reverb’d distortion. Deastro’s Mind Altar EP (release format is digital download and/or a Mike Cina print which includes the digital download with purchase) isn't "the new face of Deastro," it’s merely one iteration of a constantly evolving entity. The Deastro on Mind Altar shouts up from a deep well of echo, achieving a level of sonic mystery and menace that’s quite new for the mercurial artist. The sky-scraping anthems are still there, although they’re now shrouded in clouds. Expect more from Deastro in the near future. (source: Ghostly Int)
