Lunch is served!!!

Lunch is served!!!
I just thought Id tease you all today since I have the time to play. Im doing laundry. I made those Foccacia yesterday and felt like having some for lunch. Wasnt sure what I wanted to do with them , then I remembered one of my favorite chef lunches. I call them chef lunches because I didnt always have time to eat at work so I could make a plate of bread, cheeses, pates or other meats and fruit and nibble on them while I worked. I liked it so much it became one of my favorite bachelorette type meals too. Since Im no longer single I havent made it in ages. Today I did.

What you see there is a mixture of this yummy Fig Balsamic vinegar I bought up in Napa at Dean & Delucca awhile ago and of course good extra virgin olive oil. Next is a wonderful new cheese I found at the remodeled grocery store here. They are trying to make it more upscale and bring in new things. Its a cabernet wine soaked cheddar thats why it looks purple and its delicious. So since I only have apples in the house right now , I sliced some of those to go with it. Add the Focaccia to dip in the oil mix and its lunch!

*** I must tell you, these Foccacia are incredible with the Fig/oil mix. Heavenly!!

Bakerella's Book Signing and a Giveaway!

I have the best husband in the world.  He didn't want me standing in line all day at a book signing because I just had the baby.  So, he went to Salt Lake early this morning to get me a ticket to meet Bakerella.  He even had to do some sweet talking to get me a ticket.  I was so very grateful.  I got number 10!

Here she is.......Bakerella!  She is cute and sassy, just as I had envisioned from reading her blog.

I have always been a fan of Bakerella, and I love to make her cake pops.  She just put together a Cake Pop book, with amazing illustrations and step by step instructions to make the delicious treats.  I was so excited to see that Salt Lake was on her list of stops on her book signing tour.

Williams Sonoma had cute displays of her books all over the store.

We ended up getting to Trolley Square just in time for Bakerella to arrive.  There were SO, SO, SO many people there!  And once again, I was happy to have a ticket that said number 10 on it.  They took people back in groups of 10, so I was able to get in quickly.  Bakerella was a lot of fun!  She was so nice to let us get our picture taken with her.  My daughter passed up an opportunity to go to the park with the other kids, just so she could meet Bakerella.  I was so glad to have her with me.

My daughter was a little shy when it came to meeting Bakerella.

When we left, there were still hundreds of people in line waiting their turn.  We had so much fun!

Now for the giveaway.  I have a signed copy of this wonderful book, that I will give to one lucky reader of my blog.  There are 4 ways to enter (you can do all 4 if you would like).....  Please be sure to leave a separate comment for each.

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!!
Congratulations to Carrie...comment #24!  I will be contacting you!

My favorite fall treat is pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. (Although, I tend to make them year round because they are so yummy.)

Thanks to everyone who entered.

Darin and Kari's Wedding Cake

I vowed that I would never make any cakes 9 months pregnant.  But when my brother asked me to make his wedding cake, I was happy to do it.  Luckily, I have a loving husband who helps me when I need it.  He actually did most of the work on this cake, and it turned out great!

Two of the cakes are chocolate with a chocolate butter cream filling, and the other two are a white cake with butter cream filling.  As we were getting ready to stack the cake, my 3-year old came up to my husband with cake crumbs all over his face!  We soon realized that he had taken several handfuls of this cake and eaten them.  We were able to doctor it up and save the day.  It turned out great, and I am very thankful for my husband, Jim, for helping out so much with this cake.  And a BIG congratulations to Darin and Kari on their special day.  Thanks for letting us do your cake!  I think I will now retire from cakes until this baby is born.
This is Darin and Kari cutting their cake.  It wasn't long before they had it smashed in each other's faces.  They were sure silly!

Monster Khaos Review

Monster Khaos Review
I mentioned in another post that I kind of liked this one, but couldn't find any in the local stores. Well, guess what, one of the stores had recently gotten a new shipment of Monster beverages. This one tastes a bit different from the other Monster drinks. It tastes like a mix between a tropical juice and a standard monster. Let me know if I am wrong, but I detect mango and orange flavouring, which might also explain the color of the M on the can - orange. I like the taste
and that it is more like a fruit beverage than an energy drink. The one thing I do not enjoy is the cough syrup" undertone. If you are drinking it fast, the undertone may not become apparent, but as soon as you start taking small sips, it will. On the positive side, the cough syrup taste does not stay for long as it is overpowered by the taste of the fruit juices. I would also prefer the juice to not be as sweet, but what can you do? Diet version? I don't think a diet one will taste as good, it might be even worse.

As for the energy, it is there. You get the same kick as with any other Monster. The can contains 150 mg of caffeine which can boost your energy levels in several different ways - gulping down the drink, which will result in some jitters, or drinking it slowly, which will deliver small bursts of energy with just the possibility of some jitters.

Scores:
Cost - $2.99 CAD
Taste - 7.9/10
Performance - 7.5/10

Overall - 15.4...go for this one if you want a Monster, but don't like the taste of the regular one

HyDrive Energy Electrolyte Formula Review

HyDrive Energy Electrolyte Formula Review
In my hands, I am hold the last formula of the HyDrive Energy drinks - Electrolyte Formula - which is lemon lime flavoured.

The beverage smells a lot like lemonade, but does not have that intense and sour lemonade flavour. It starts off watery, like the Strength Formula, but the taste builds up by the end of each sip. Half way through each sip, lemon and lime flavours start to emerge and by the end they are fully noticeable. Strangely, another flavour emerges at the finish - tangerine. It sounds strange, but this is what the finish tastes to me like. You can almost compare the taste to the yellow Gatorade, but once you drink at least half the bottle of HyDrive, the taste builds up and starts to differ from Gatorade. Like the other HyDrive formulas, the taste becomes more intense and flavour-rich, yet not very sweet. The Electrolyte Formula was enjoyable and easy to drink, but it wasn't my favorite HyDrive in terms of the taste. I would have enjoyed it more if the initial taste was made more flavourful.

You guessed it, this HyDrive formula contains 145 mg of caffeine. The unique ingredients are Magnesium, Chloride and Phosphorous. Within 30 minutes I started to get the already familiar feeling of clean and gradual build up of energy with my energy levels peaking 15 minutes later. I felt calm and very focused for 15 - 20 minutes right as my energy was peaking and plateauing. I was at this peak plateau for a good 3 hours after which I came back down, but did not crash.

The HyDrive Energy series was one of my favorite energy drink series, if not the favorite. Each formula has unique ingredients and every single one tasted great. Most other energy drink series have good flavours and bad flavours, but all the HyDrive formulas were consistently good. The energy kick was about the same with each flavour and though the caffeine content was not the highest, at 145 mg, the ingredients in the energy blend worked together to provide a few hours of clean energy with no jitters or a crash. It was an absolute pleasure to try all of the formulas and I hope the company expands their business into Canada.

Medicinal Ingredients:
  • Vitamin E - 3 IU
  • Niacin - 20 mg
  • Vitamin B6 - 2 mg
  • Vitamin B12 - 6 mcg
  • Pantothenic Acid - 10 mg
  • Phosphorous - 16 mg
  • Sodium 140 mg
  • Potassium 50 mg
  • Caffeine - 145 mg
  • Taurine - 50 mg
  • L-Carnitine - 25 mg
  • L-Arginine - 25 mg
  • Magnesium - 2 mg
  • Chloride - 2 mg
Non-Medicinal Ingredients: purified water, sucrose, citric acid, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, monopotassium phosphate, natural flavor, gum arabic, sucralose, glycerol ester of wood rosin, yellow #5, blue #1.

Scores:
Cost - not sold in Canada
Taste - 8.5/10
Energy - 7.9/10

Overall - 16.4/20...not the most flavour-rich HyDrive energy drink, but it still is one of the better tasting ones on the market

Red Fire Energy Drink Review

Red Fire Energy Drink Review
It has been over a week since I reviewed an energy drink so here is one. This is Red Fire and yes, it is made by the folks who make Red Rain and Red Rave - Cott. So how is Red Fire any different from the aforementioned products? Cott make Red Fire specially for Sobeys, which in turn sell this value energy drink under their Compliments label. The first time I saw Red Fire was in the Fall of 2009 and the reason why I didn't buy it back then was because it was only sold in packs of 4 for $6.99 CAD, and I never buy energy drinks I haven't tried in bulk. The reason why I finally bought it is because the Sobeys that I went to was selling these individually for $1.99 CAD each.

Having said that Red Fire is made by Cott, I half expect it to taste like a Red Bull clone. I was not disappointed. Not only does Red Fire taste like a Red Bull clone, but it has inherited the Red Rain sour kick which gives it a similar crisp finish.

In the energy department, Red Fire is identical to Red Bull, Red Rain and Red Rave with 80 mg of caffeine, which is good enough for a a burst of energy lasting for about an hour.

I noticed that a lot of users who visit this blog search for ingredients lists so I decided to start listing the ingredients found in each energy drink/shot, mint, etc. I try. So here are the first 2 lists:

Medicinal Ingredients:
  • Taurine - 1,000 mg
  • D-glucuronolactone - 600 mg
  • Caffeine - 80 mg
  • Niacin - 20 mg
  • Pantothenic acid - 5 mg
  • Vitamin B6 - 5 mg
  • Vitamin B12 - 5 mcg
Non-medicinal Ingredients: Carbonated water, sugar/glucose-fructose, malic acid, sodium citrate, natural and artificial flavour, potassium benzoate, inositol, colour.

Scores:
Cost - $1.99 CAD for a 250 mL can, or $6.99 CAD for a 4 pack
Taste - 8.3/10
Energy - 6/10

Overall - 14.3/20...made by Cott for Sobeys, tastes just like Red Rain and Red Rave

Holiday Survival Week ~ Quick & Easy Appetizers

I've compiled some Quick & Easy Appetizer Ideas for you ~ I've made most and sometimes easy is best! Don't tire yourself out so much that you don't have time to enjoy the holiday festivities.

Tortilla Roll 'Em Ups. Spread a thin layer of your favorite cream cheese spread on large flour tortillas (you can use plain, herb, sun-dried tomato, or spinach-flavored). Top with thin layers of turkey or roast beef, thinly sliced tomato, and baby spinach leaves. Roll the tortilla up very tightly, similar to a jelly roll. Chill rolls for about 30 minutes, then cut rolls into slices, creating small finger sandwiches. Note: These are really easy & fun to make ~ get the kids involved.

A Little Blue. Fill baked miniature phyllo dough shells with a small dollop of softened cream cheese. Top with a bit of crumbled blue cheese and a sprinkle of snipped tart dried cherries. If you like, sprinkle with candied pecans or almonds.

Where's the Shrimp? Who doesn't love shrimp? For a super-easy appetizer, thaw cooked frozen shrimp (or steam, saute, or boil your own raw shrimp). Place bowls of dipping sauces on a platter (such as tartar or cocktail sauce or aioli), then surround the bowls with the cooked shrimp.

A Taste of the Mediterranean. Purchased hummus and some yummy crackers or pita chips are an easy way to either keep hunger at bay until dinner or to supplement an appetizer spread. Select a couple of different flavors, such as roasted red pepper, roasted garlic, or black olive.

Dip This. Every party needs a dip, but here's an option that's a little bit more gourmet. Purchase garlic- or basil-flavored oil or make your own variations by stirring herbs, garlic, or grated Parmesan cheese into olive oil. Pour the oil into small dipping dishes and serve with chunks of focaccia or baguette slices for dipping.

Twisted Salsa. Here's a fun salsa variation that's almost a meal in itself. Combine drained canned black beans, thawed frozen corn, chopped roma tomatoes, sliced green onions, chopped cilantro, chopped green pepper, and chopped avocado. Toss the mixture with some lime juice, salt, and pepper. If you like, you can also add chopped garlic, sliced black olives, chopped jalapeno peppers, or anything else! Serve with tortilla chips, or just give guests a spoon to dig in!

Relish the Ease. Prepare a relish tray like no other! On a platter, artistically arrange roasted red peppers; green, black, or specialty stuffed olives; cheese cubes; sliced meats, such as pastrami, ham, or salami; marinated artichoke hearts; smoked sliced salmon lox; marinated or fresh vegetables; and pickled peppers. If you like, serve the relish tray with hard or soft breadsticks.

An Apple a Day. Prepare a platter with sliced apples, pears, and/or grapes, crisp bread or crackers, and your choice of cheese, such as blue or brie.

Simply Salmon. With a pastry bag, pipe flavored cream cheese (such as chive) on cucumber slices. Top each cucumber slice with a small piece of purchased smoked salmon. If desired, garnish with fresh chopped chives.

Serve Them Up

Here's a great look for a casual holiday buffet table. Simply roll napkins and arrange them in a vase, basket, or bowl. The napkins will add color to the table and be handy for guests to pick up.

PANCAKES!!!!!!!

PANCAKES!!!!!!!
I always liked going to the International House of Pancakes. When my kids were little and their dad would be on the road, I would take them to have breakfast for dinner. They just thought that was so cool and loved going. They still talk about that today. Now my bf and I like to go once in awhile when I dont feel like cooking. A few months ago tho I tried a different pancake that they make. They are called the Country Griddle Cakes and are made with cream of wheat. They have different texture, sort of chewy and yet light. We went there recently and found out they have a new menu and they are no longer on there! So I went hunting online to find a copycat recipe. I made it today for breakfast with some bacon and YUM it was a success so here it is for you.

IHOP Cream of Wheat Pancakes or Country Griddlecakes
1/ 1/4c. flour
1 1/2c. buttermilk (or make the sour milk version of it)
1/3c. cream of wheat, dry
1 egg
1/3c. sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4c. vegetable oil
1/2 tsp. salt
Heat a skillet over medium heat. (I used my electric griddle). In a large bowl, combine all ingredients until smooth. Pour the batter by 1/3c. portions into a pan coated with cooking spray and cook pancakes till brown.
Makes about 10

I didnt have buttermilk here so I made the sour milk equivlent of that and I cut back a bit on the sugar only using 1/4c. instead of 1/3c.

The bf proclaimed them awesome and I have to agree so I guess Ill be making these more often. BTW whenever I make pancakes or french toast I freeze the extras. A quick zap in the microwave and Ive got an instant breakfast. I never toss the leftovers away. I know my dog wishes I would tho . I frequently add vanilla to my pancakes when I make them but today I did them just as you see. I asked the bf if he thinks it needs it and he says they are perfect just like this. Dont mess with perfection!

EQ Smart Energy Drink Lemon Lime Review

EQ Smart Energy Drink Lemon Lime Review
I finally found the time to continue with the EQ Smart Energy Drink line-up. Today's tablet is lemon lime flavoured and this time I poured less than 8 oz of water to see what it will do for the flavour.

Taste

The result has the recognizable lemon lime aroma, but the taste is still very mild. You should expect this from a tablet that promises only 5 calories. A squirt of concentrated lemon juice will improve the taste significantly, but unfortunately I did not have any on hand. Though there is barely any lemon or lime in the taste, it is sweet, just like the other tablets and because it is not carbonated, it goes down really fast. Overall the flavour is very similar to the other ones with only subtle differences in the aroma and taste.

Energy

You will find the same energy blend in here as well - 1,680.7 mg. Because I used less water, I drank the energy mixture faster and thus I felt the results earlier - around the 10 minute mark. It wasn't for another 20 or so that I felt fully energized and ready to go. The feeling lasted for quite a while but it wasn't as intense as some energy drinks on the market. It was more melow and easy going and like the other EQ tablets, I did not experience a crash at the end.

Energy Blend (1,680.7 mg):
  • L-Taurine
  • d-Glucoronolactone
  • Caffeine
  • Ginkgo Biloba
Other Ingredients: citric acid, inulin, maltodextrin, natural and artificial flavours, polyethylene glycol, sucralose, canola oil

Scores:
Cost - $1.00 for a tab from the King of Caffeine
Taste - 5.8/10
Energy - 8/10

Overall - 13.8/20...good energy kick, but a bland flavour

'Best Bet' - Championship Betting Tips with Betfair

Hi, my name is Tom Mallows, online sports writer with Betfair.
I am guest writing on this blog where I shall be previewing all the weekend games in The Championship along with a selection of Premier League fixtures

In addition, I will also be looking in detail at some of the weekend's LIVE TV games.

Every fortnight, I will bring you all the latest odds, preview the biggest matches, and hopefully try and win you some cash with my 'best bet' football tips.

This weekend sees seven fixtures in the Championship and six tasty looking fixtures in the FA Cup Fifth Round involving Championship sides. Here's my pick of the action:

Watford v Chelsea
Saturday 14th February KO 17:30 LIVE ON SETANTA

Both these sides have had their troubles recently. 1984 finalists Watford, in the Premier League just two years ago, now find themselves struggling at the wrong end of the Championship. Manager Brendan Rogers will be facing the side he left earlier in the season to take over at Vicarage Road.

Chelsea meanwhile have endured a mini-crisis of their own, slipping behind in the title race and sacking boss Luis Felipe Scolari this week after just five months in the job. Guus Hiddink is widely tipped to take temporary charge – but not in time for Saturday.

Current Match odds:

Watford 9-1 Draw 4/1 Chelsea 5/2

Scorecast:
Watford 1-0 24/1 2-0 84/1 3-0 319/1

Chelsea 0-1
13/2 0-2 6/1 0-3 10/1

Draw 0-0 14/1 1-1 10/1 2-2 26/1

My ‘best bet’ prediction:

Chelsea may have their troubles, but I think they will have too much quality for Watford. It won’t be easy through, so my football betting advice would be to back a low scoring away win.
2-0 Chelsea win @ 6-1.

Swansea v Fulham
Saturday 14th February KO 12.45 LIVE ON ITV1

This has all the ingredients for a cup upset. The Premier League side who struggle on the road travel to a lower division side high in confidence and fresh from knocking out Premier League Opposition in the last round.
Roberto Martinez has done a great job with Swansea. Not only has he guided them to the FA Cup 5th round but his side look well set for a late promotion charge, couple this with their attractive attacking brand of football, they are a tough proposition for anyone at the moment.

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson has invested wisely to help the club into mid-table following last seasons last-gasp relegation escape. But the team still has a poor away record and that could count against them on Saturday.

Current Match odds:

Swansea 7/4 Draw 5/2 Fulham 15/8

Scorecast:
Swansea 1-0 8/1 2-0 14/1 3-0 35/1 2-1 11/1

Fulham 0-1 8/1 0-2 17/1 0-3 47/1 1-2 11/1

Draw 0-0 6/1 1-1 10/1 2-2 18/1

My 'best bet' prediction:

I smell an upset here, and an opportunity to make some cash. A 2-0 home win carries some decent looking odds.
Swansea 2-0 Fulham @ 14/1.

The best of the rest:
Fancy a sections list this weekend?
A multiple bet can win you some 'serious' cash.

Here are my tips for this weekend’s matches:

Home Wins:

Birmingham v. Notts Forest
Bristol City v. Southampton
Preston v. Norwich
Arsenal v. Cardiff

Away Wins:

Doncaster v. Sheff Wed
Derby v. Man Utd
Charlton v. Plymouth

Draws:

Burnley v. Wolves
Ipswich v. Blackpool
Sheff Utd v. Hull

My Tip Of The Weekend:

I fancy Chris Coleman's Coventry to spring a FA Cup surprise against Blackburn at Ewood Park. Sam Allarydce's side are deep in a Premier League relegation battle and may take their eye off the ball on Saturday.
Blackburn 1-2 Coventry @ 20/1.

Go to Betfair for all the latest football betting for this weekend’s FA Cup games, plus all the latest Cheltenham odds for the Festival in March.

Jolt Energy Gum Spearmint Review

Jolt Energy Gum Spearmint Review
I have been chewing Jolt's Energy Gum for months now, but still haven't gotten the chance to review it. Well, I said to myself, today is the day.

Taste

I popped two pieces of gum and gave them a good chewing. Right away the sweet/minty juices of the spearmint start to flow and fill your mouth with a fresh scent. However, some bitterness does come from the energy ingredients, but it is subtle and goes away within minutes. After that you are left with nothing but a minty and slightly sweet gum. The sweetness also goes away, but that takes time. All in all, this is one of the better tasting energy gums on the market.

Energy

The front says that two pieces equal to an energy drink, but what sort of energy drink? After a quick search on the internets, I found out that each piece contains 45 mg which is not bad. Taking two at once provides you with 90 mg, which is just a little more than a 250 mL can of Red Bull or any of the other comparable energy drinks. The rush comes in fast and I felt a jolt...hehe...a jolt...within 10 minutes. Within another 10-15 minutes, I was experiencing the entire potential of the gum and it was good. There were no jitters and I just felt peppy. I could wish for a focused sensation, but I take what I am given. The energy high lasts for over an hour, about 1.5 hours and then goes away. Once again, it is comparable to a regular, 250 mL energy drink.

Ingredients: sugar, gum base, dextrose, corn syrup, corn starch, caffeine, natural and artificial flavors, glycerin, resinous glaze, ginseng, guarana, tapioca dextrin, acesulfame k, aspartame, colors, menthol, carnauba wax, sucralose, BHT, phenylketonurics.

Scores:
Cost - $2.99 for a pack from ThinkGeek
Taste - 8.5/10
Energy - from 4/10 to 10/10

Overall - 12.5/20 to 18.5/20...it all depends on how many pieces you chew at a time.

Lost Energy Drink Review

Lost Energy Drink Review
I have been avoiding Lost on the basis of cheesiness for the longest time. But today, when this was the last energy drink in the fridge of the local convenience store, I had to suck it up and get it. Why was I avoiding this? Just look at the label. It's like someone jumped on the non-conformity wagon a little too late. I think this would have worked like 10 years ago, but now it is all about clean, minimalistic labels. Just take a look at effect. Let me just write some of the
sayings I found on the can - "You're being lied to", "Tear down your idols", "THE system is down", "Search and destroy". Wasn't that great? What about the pin-up girls of the skater cut outs? It literally took me at least 2 minutes before I figured out all the crap on the can. Bravo Lost, bravo.

Now, I shall open the can and try it. I am a bit scared to at this point as I am half expecting this to taste like water, citric acid, some coloring and that generic cough syrup taste. Are you serious? This tastes exactly like Monster. According to wikipedia, this drink is based on Monster Energy, made by the same company for Lost Enterprises. Based on? It's more a change of clothes...label in this case. It costs the same too, so why does this even exist? The regular Monster was even on the same shelf. I am extremely disappointed. I would rather buy Monster than this poser. There is no point to discuss the caffeine content because it is the same as Monster - 160 mg.

Scores:
Cost - $2.99 CAD
Taste - 5.9/10
Energy - 7.5/10

Overall - 11/20...I had to take some points off for being screwed by the MAN pushing outdated slogans

Oven Beef Stew

Oven Beef Stew I made beef stew last nite. Its one of my boyfriends favorite meals. I make this with more meat than it says because he likes a meaty stew. He loves this so much that when I make it he will even take it for lunch often so I make alot and freeze the rest in small containers so he can microwave it at work. I found this recipe many yrs ago when I was first married. My mom used to make stew on the stove top and I tried to use her recipe but it always scorched and burned and I didn't like it. My mom is not the greatest cook either. She has her specialties but that's about it. Now my dad cooks all the time. I don't think she misses it and dad's a really good cook. Dad even took this recipe and adapted it to the microwave for himself. I don't cook much in the microwave, I don't like it. I mostly use it to reheat. So here's the recipe and pics. I make way more than the recipe calls for so don't expect it to look like as much as mine. I used 5lbs of stew meat, and 1 1/2 times the amt. of veggies and double the spices, etc. but still only 2 cans broth, but yours will look like this in the different stages. What I love about this recipe is I can make a great dinner and not have to watch it.

OVEN BEEF STEW SERVES 6
1 bag (12 oz.) frozen chopped onions or 4-5 onions chopped
2lbs. stew meat, cubed ( I cut stew meat from the store into about 1/2-3/4in. cubes)
1/4 c. soy sauce
3/4 tsp. salt-1/2 tsp. pepper
1 tsp. paprika
6tb. flour
2 cans (10 1/2oz. each) condensed beef broth (must be this not bouillon)
4 lg. potatoes , cut up
4 lg. carrots, sliced
2 celery ribs, sliced diagonally
1c. peas or 1 (8oz.) pkg. whole mushrooms (optional)

Layer onions on the bottom of a roasting pan after chopping. Top with cubed meat and sprinkle with soy sauce, salt and pepper, paprika and flour. Pour broth from both cans over all. (I found this makes alot of gravy that's not as thick as I like so I add another 2-4 tb. flour depending on how thick you like your stew. It will also thicken up more by the next day.) You dont have to stir it in. It makes the gravy as it bakes, I love it! If all the flour isnt absorbed when you take it out, then stir the rest in real good.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Cover pot and bake in oven set at 350 degrees for 1hr. Remove to add veggies.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Stir in cut up veggies. (I like to cut them up while the meat is cooking and put in a bowl till the hour is up. Then all I have to do is dump them in and stir.) Bake 1hr. more covered.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Remove cover and bake 1/2 hr or longer till vegetables are tender. Its also a good time to check on gravy thickness because without the cover it will continue to thicken. If you add too much flour tho you can thin it down with some water or more broth. Its pretty forgiving. In this last half hr. you can also add the peas. If you add mushrooms, I quarter them before adding. We like everything fairly bite size.

The original recipe didn't call for peas or mushrooms but I like them and use them if I have them. I just toss the frozen peas right in so they don't over cook. I did add mushrooms this time because I had some in the house, no peas around here last nite tho.

'Brits All Ready To Hit The Ground Running' - Betting Tips with Betfair

In the last five years English teams have dominated Europe's premier competition and while that may not last forever, few would bet against a perfect start to this year's event, for all four Premier League sides.

Last night Chelsea and Manchester United both picked up three points, with victories against Porto and Besiktas respectively.

Tonight sees Liverpool and Arsenal enter the fray as they take on Standard Liege and Champions League newcomers Debrecen of Hungary.

There's very little value to be had backing a Liverpool victory, with the Reds as short as 1.11 in the match odds. However, there could be money to be made by predicting a high scoring affair. All three of Liverpool's wins this season have witnessed four goals or more and with Debrecen inexperienced at this level, there could be another goal fest at Anfield.
The Champions League betting odds currently stand at: over 3.5 goals in the match available at 2.08, with +4.5 goals a tempting 3.55.

Arsenal should face a tougher test as they travel to Belgium to play Standard Liege. The hosts came within two minutes of taking Liverpool to penalties in last season's Champions League third qualifying round and could provide tricky opposition for Arsene Wenger's team.

Unfortunately for Liege, they will face an Arsenal side with a real point to prove, after suffering successive league defeats. Arsenal can be backed to win both halves at 2.86 but if you fancy an upset, the Belgian champions look good value at 5.5 in the 'draw no bet' market.

Elsewhere, Rangers will be desperate to restore some pride in Scottish football after the national side's failure to qualify for the World Cup.

German side Stuttgart stand in their way, but could be prime candidates for an upset after picking up just five points from their opening five league matches in the Bundesliga.
Rangers are a massive 6.6 to win the game and complete a good opening week for Brits abroad.

Pineapple Pound Cake

Better late than never...I'm finally getting around to posting a new recipe. Even though the summer days are longer I find myself much busier so time is just flying past. Today, I'd like to share something that I whipped up last weekend...a  delightful Pineapple Pound Cake. We had teriyaki chicken thighs with stir fry veggies/noodle combo for dinner and while the chicken baked it was easy to throw together this cake for dessert.

I had chunk pineapple so just threw it in the blender to crush for 10 to 15 seconds...if you don't want a messy blender to deal with then I suggest purchasing pre-crushed pineapple. The hubby absolutley fell in love with this cake and when it's served with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream it is out of this world.  I would imagine that if you added a bit of coconut either/or the batter or topping that you'd have a nice tropical 'pina colada' flavor.  Enjoy!

Ingredients:
•1/4 cup crushed pineapple with juice
•1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
•1 cup butter, softened (2 sticks)
•2 cups granulated sugar
•6 large eggs, room temperature
•3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
•1 teaspoon baking powder
•1/4 cup nonfat milk
•1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Glaze:
1 cup crushed pineapple, drained
•1/4 cup butter, softened
•1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar

Preparation:
Put 3/4 cup of undrained pineapple with its juice into a bowl and set aside. Drain remaining pineapple and measure 1 cup of drained crushed pineapple; set aside.

Cream shortening, butter, and sugar together in large bowl. Add room temperature eggs, one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition.

Sift flour and baking powder together; add to creamed mixture, one spoonful at a time, alternately with milk.

Add vanilla; stir in 3/4 cup undrained pineapple with juice and blend well.

Pour batter into a well greased and floured 10-inch tube pan.

Place in cold oven; set oven to 325° and bake for 1 1/2 hours, or until top springs back when lightly touched.

Let the cake stand for a few minutes in the pan before running a knife around the edges to loosen. Remove cake carefully and place on a cooling rack for a few minutes. Place cake on a large round plate (make sure it's plenty big so that topping doesn't spill over sides).

Topping: Combine butter, confectioners' sugar, and about 1 cup drained pineapple. Pour the topping over cake while cake is still very warm. Enjoy!

Grilled BLT Panini

Flour tortillas are spread with ranch dressing and filled with cooked bacon, sliced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and Gruyere cheese, then grilled.  I'm going to make some of these up for our little Super Bowl party next month. The George Foreman Grill© will definitley come in handy for these delightful snacks.

Ingredients:

16 slices (applewood smoked) bacon
4 large flour tortillas
1/2 cup ranch dressing
2 large ripe tomatoes, thinly sliced
4 oz Gruyere cheese, thinly sliced
2 cups shredded lettuce
2 Tbsp finely chopped purple (or red) onion
1/2 tsp each sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions:
Place bacon slices in large skillet over medium heat and cook gently until golden and crisp. Remove crisped bacon from skillet and place on paper towels and lightly blot to absorb excess grease. Place tortillas on work surface and spread Ranch dressing in center of each tortilla. Place 4 bacon slices on the side of each tortilla. Top with tomatoes, cheese, lettuce and onion and then sprinkle with salt and pepper. Fold to form a wrap; cook seam side down on medium-high grill for 2 1/2 minutes, turn and continue grilling for another two minutes (or place in your Panini maker or Foreman-type grill). Serve immediately.  Number of Servings: 4

5 Hour Energy Shot Review

5 Hour Energy Shot Review
Yesss, the 10 am Monday morning wall. After a weekend of doing daily quests in WoW, not sleeping properly and drinking too much of sweet, delicious scotch I was dying on my desk...That could have also been due to the extremely dull studies I was going over. Six floors down, 1 traffic light and 146 steps later I crossed the Rexall border and headed for the 2 shelves in the store that contained more energy shots than any 7-11 I have ever been to.

The one thing that caught my attention was the discontinued "female energy shot", which was marked down 50%. I wondered why, but couldn't find the courage to make the purchase so I went for the shot next to - the 5 hour energy shot. I have had a citrus one before but did not enjoy the taste and didn't feel the effects because it was during a time period I was overly caffeinated. The shot cost $2.99 CA, which is quite standard for a shot and on the slightly cheaper side compared to an energy drink (I am talking about a large Red Bull). I went for the berry one thinking that maybe it wouldn't taste as disgusting as the synthesized citrus shots.

I wasn't wrong, the taste was not too bad. The shot still had the standard "sugar free"/synthesized taste, but the berry flavour managed to mask a lot of it. I felt a clean, "calm" rush around 15 minutes later and no jitters. I felt compelled to continue working and did not feel tired until around 3 hours later. Three hours of "clean" energy is not bad in my opinion, but I certainly did not get the 5 hours I was promised. At the end of the third hour I hit a serious wall...I was completely out of juice. That was not cool, but the problem was eventually fixed with a cup of tea.

Scores:
Cost - 8/10
Taste - 6/10
Performance - 8/10

Overall - 22/30...Not bad, I would buy it again

Inked Oroborus Energy Drink Review

Inked Oroborus Energy Drink Review
I think the name is Oroborus, the first letter is a bit confusing. Anyways, I went to 7-11 to see what new and exciting energy drinks they might carry. I saw the Inked Energy Drinks, beverages made for and sold by 7-11. I have had a couple of them when they first came out, but now there are some new flavours added to the line up. I picked up Oroborus and Druidic. It seems like there is an ongoing promotion and that 7-11 is trying to get customers to buy their brand of energy drinks rather than all the other popular ones like Monster, Full Throttle, AMP and Red Bull. The promotion yesterday was the same one as when the energy drinks first came out - buy one, get one free. The price is not bad either - $2.69 CAD. There are also some Inked Energy Shots at $2.69 per shot with the same promotion - buy one, get one free. You can also mix and match - one energy shot and one energy drink.

When I was wondering which flavours to pick, I noticed that 100%, absolutely all of the cans in the fridge, were dirty. There were bits of dirt/dust covering all of the tops of the cans. There was dirt around the mouth opening and all around the rim...of every single can. Does that mean no one buys these things, or are they just from an old stock? Once I got to work I had to use my trusty ThinkGeek caffeine mug to try this energy drink. Check out how dark the beverage is, dark purple, almost black. This is much darker than the Monster Mixxd or AMP Traction.

Inked Oroborus Energy Drink Review
Inked Oroborus is said to taste like pomegranate and blueberry, but I think it tastes more like sour lies. OK, bad choice of words, but it really just tastes sour (probably from the artificial pomegranate taste or the citric acid) and a bit of blueberries and grape. The scent is definitely of blueberries, but the taste is more of pomegranate. The aftertaste is a mix of sour pomegranate and a hint of blueberries. The overall taste is a bit dull and I think it could be sharpened up a little through the use of more JUICE. Some companies put juice content, this one only lists "natural flavours" in the non-medicinal ingredients list.

The caffeine content is listed at 80 mg per 250 mL. Why isn't the content given on a per can basis? Why should I have to calculate this myself? Very, very inconvenient, but oh well. Once all the numbers and formulas were entered into Excel, the caffeine content came up to 151.36 mg per can, quite the average for a 473 mL can. The drink pepped me up a bit, but not as much as I was expecting it to.

So as I kept writing this and finishing up the Inked, I started tasting the citric acid more and more. It was becoming quite dominant in the aftertaste as well. That's not a bad thing, but it is not something you get from other energy drinks. Another thing I noticed was their blank website...at least blank at this time. The title of the main page is default - blank.

Scores:
Cost - $2.69 per can, but you really get 2 for the price of one, so $1.35 CAD (had to round it up)
Taste - 6.1/10...I did say it tasted sour and a bit dull on the flavour, but I didn't mind it
Energy - 7.1/10

Overall - 13.2/20...I decided to start including the taste and energy ratings. Other drinks that didn't taste too good were getting higher ratings because of their low cost.

Check out the other Inked products I have tried:
